Happy Spring Break!

If you missed class on Friday, I added some additional questions about the nervous system.  You should answer them in your notes and I will check them off when we get back from break.  I also added a review packet for the topics we covered last year (with the exception of evolution).  You should start going over the topics, checking what you know pretty well, what you need lots of review on, and what you haven't heard of before.  We will be doing some comprehensive assessments to prepare for the IB exam towards the end of April.  Everyone will participate in these assessments, not just IB testers, so make sure that you spend some time on the review.  Many of you have already submitted the Antibiotic Lab, but there are still many that have not been received, so hopefully I will be seeing those soon.

3/11-3/22

Whoops, I forgot to update this last week.    There is a SPARK lecture on engineering on Monday 3/18.  If you are taking the IB Biology Exam, please turn in any graded or ungraded IB labs before Spring Break!!

• Mon 3/11:  Fertilization videos.  Structure of mature sperm and mature oocyte.  Human fertilization.
• Wed 3/13:  Pregnancy and IVF worksheet.  Do the pregnancy part with the text books and the IVF part using the internet (site your resources).  
• Fri 3/15:  Antibiotic Lab due.  Please turn in a hard copy and a copy via turnitin.com.  Practice drawings for this unit.  Exchange drawings and check for accuracy.  Notes on the placenta and IVF.  Hand out Hormone and Reproduction Review.  Test on Wed 3/20.
• Mon 3/18:  Ethics of IVF.  Any questions on Review Sheet?  Writing outlines for this Review Sheet is optional.
• Wed 3/20:  Turn in Hormone and Reproduction Review before test if you are going to turn it in.  Take Hormone and Reproduction Test.  Start the nervous system.
• Fri 3/22:  Neurons and synapses.

2/25-3/8: Group IV Project on Monday 3/4!!

Have you submitted your kidney essay yet through turnitin.com?  The class ID number is 6161786 and the password is "nephron".  There is an instructions document that will help you through.  Group IV Field Trip is coming up on Monday, March 4.  You are required to go if you are testing in an IB science and you did not do the Group IV Project last year.  Please get your Field Trip form signed ASAP so that teachers know you will be gone.

• Mon 2/25:  Turn in hormone worksheet if not already.  Notes on hormones, feedback, thermoregulation, and diabetes.  Read 40.2, 40.3 and Chapter 45 (which you essentially did in doing the worksheet).   Get your Group IV Project Field Trip form signed.  
• Wed 2/27:  Introduce Antibiotics Lab.  Bring in something that you think has antibiotic properties to test!!  Watch video for Group IV Project preparation.  Start reproduction.  Start reading Chapter 46.  
• Fri 3/1:  Make plates for antibiotics lab and get them incubating.  The human reproduction systems and the role of hormones. 
• Mon 3/4:  Group IV Project!  All Day Field Trip.   Lists will be out the previous week to tell you which group you are in and where to go.  Bring weather-appropriate shoes and clothing as you will be walking around downtown.  Bring your Tri-Met ID if you plan to use transit and bring money for lunch if you plan to buy it.
• Wed 3/6:  Record qualitative and quantitative data for antibiotics lab.  Lab write-up due Fri 3/15.  Continue with human reproduction.  
• Fri 3/8:  Spermatogenesis and oogenesis.   

OHSU Field Trip and Topics for Short Test on Friday 2/22, and Kidney "Essay" information

Are you ready for the field trip tomorrow?  Make sure that you eat a good breakfast, bring a snack, bring your Tri-Met ID and dress for the weather.  We will meet (quietly) in the alcove by the elevator at the end of sophomore hall.  I will need to do a final check of field trip forms and get a final count of who is going with us.  Please be patient during this process.  Remember that there is no cell phone/camera use when we are viewing the cadaver.  If you are feeling faint, bend your knees and move around to increase your circulation. You can also step out into a neighboring room or the hallway if you need to.   We should be back to Lincoln in time for your 4th period class.

Topics for short test on AIDS/Vaccines/the Kidney on Friday 2/22:
1)  Outline the effects of HIV on the immune system.
2)  Discuss the cause, transmission, and social implications of AIDS.
3)  Explain the principle of vaccination.
4)  Discuss the benefits and dangers of vaccination.
5)  Define excretion.
6)  Draw and label a diagram of the kidney.
7)  Annotate a diagram of a glomerulus and associated nephron to show the function of each part. (be able to label parts and describe their function).
8)  Explain the process of ultrafiltration, including blood pressure, fenestrated blood capillaries, and basement membrane.
9)  Define osmoregulation.
10)  Explain the reabsorption of glucose, water and salts in the proximal convoluted tubule, including the role of microvilli, osmosis, and active transport.
11)  Explain the role of the loop of Henle, medulla, collecting duct, and ADH in maintaining the water balance of the blood.
12)  Explain the differences in the concentration of proteins, glucose and urea between blood plasma, glomerular filtrate and urine.  (we will look at this one on Wednesday)


Kidney "Essay:  we will sign up on turnitin.com on Wednesday.  You may turn in your essay through turnitin.com starting on Wednesday 2/20 and continuing through Friday 2/22.

In this essay, you should describe what happens in the kidney, from the entrance of blood in the renal artery to the exit of the filtrate out the ureter and filtered blood out the renal vein.  You may be creative and use an analogy in your essay if you would like, but please use scientific vocabulary.  Approximate length should be 1-2 pages depending on spacing.  It seems to me that 1 page at 1.5 spacing should be adequate, but make sure that you check your work for completeness.   Having a friend read through it is always a good idea.

A New Semester! (And your last at LHS)

• Mon 2/4:  Final Exams Back and Recollect.  Group work on HIV/AIDS.  
• Wed 2/6:  Hand out Permission Slips for OHSU Cadaver-Lab Field Trip on Tuesday, February 19th.  Computer research on HIV/AIDS and Vaccination.  Turn in group work from Monday.  Read 43.4.
• Fri 2/8:  Notes on HIV/AIDS, Vaccination, Autoimmune Disorders, and start the Kidney.  Short video clips on HIV/AIDS.  Read p. 947 on vaccinations.  Turn in computer research hand-out from Wednesday.  Please get Field Trip Permission Forms (2 of them) signed ASAP!
• Tues 2/12:  Structure and function of the kidney.  Start with overall form, glomerulus, nephron, fenestrated blood capillaries, and basement membrane.  Reabsorption of glucose, water, and salts.  Color parts of kidney on both sides of anatomy coloring sheet.  Read 44.3.
• Thurs 2/14:  Explain the roles of the Loop of Henle, medulla, collecting duct and ADH in maintaining the water balance of the blood.  Kidney computer simulation.  Read 44.4.
• Fri 2/15:  What can go wrong?  Kidney problems and dialysis.
• Mon 2/18:  President's Day.  No School!
• Tues 2/19:  OHSU Field Trip.  Please meet outside my room no later than 9:55!  We will be heading out the door at 10:00 am sharp!  Remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring your Tri-Met ID.  We will have lunch at OHSU before we return.  You can bring your lunch or purchase at the cafeteria
• Wed 2/20:  Finish up work on the kidney.  Short test on the kidney, HIV/AIDS and vaccination on Friday.
