The Weeks of 12/9-12/20

These are the last 2 weeks before Winter Break!  We have a big test (Chapters 9+10) and a big lab (Metabolic Rates Lab) before the break, but then you are done with the toughest unit of this course.  Yippee!

  • Mon 12/9:  Turn in Photosynthesis worksheet if not already.  Notes on Photosynthesis through the light dependent reactions.  Read 10.1-10.3.
  • Tues 12/10:  OAKS testing for Juniors.  When finished testing, return to class and work on the Mitochondrion and Chloroplast coloring worksheet.  Rough Draft for Metabolic Rates Lab due on Thursday.  Hand out 9+10 Review for test next Thursday 12/19.
  • Thurs 12/12:  Color-Marking (a form of peer review) Metabolic Rates Lab.  Final Draft due Tuesday 12/17 (please keep the color-marked version and turn it in as well).  Notes on the Light Independent Reactions of Photosynthesis.  Complete Mito/Chloroplast worksheet and get checked off.  Try computer simulation of photophosphorylation.  Finish reading Chapter 10.
  • Mon 12/16:  SPARK lecture on Brain Cancer today.  Review Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis.
  • Tues 12/17:  Turn in Final Draft of Metabolic Rate Lab and Color-Marked version.  Jeopardy Review for 9+10 Test.  Maybe start Mitosis?
  • Thurs 12/19:  Turn in 9+10 Review.  Take 9+10 Test.  Work on Mitosis.
Have a Fantastic Winter Break!  Remember that this is a perfect time to read a book from the Extra Credit Book List (see documents section) or to review semester material.  Final Exams are earlier than normal this year.

The Week of 12/2-12/6

I hope you are enjoying your week off!  Remember to read the lab hand-out for the "Measuring Metabolic Rate" lab before you come in on Monday.  I also recommend reviewing Chapter 9 and to start reading Chapter 10.

  • Mon 12/2:  Practice the protocol for data-taking for the "Measuring Metabolic Rate" lab.  Take preliminary data.  Get ready for the lab tomorrow.
  • Tues 12/3:  Take data for the Measuring Metabolic Rate Lab and enter your data in the class data-base.  Come up with a research question, background, variables, etc.  Your completed rough draft should be done by next Tuesday, 12/10.
  • Thurs 12/5:  More on lab and processing the data.  Start photosynthesis.  Photosynthesis worksheet using the class textbooks.  Read 10.1 and 10.2.

›-Should know energy yield (in the form of carriers) for each part
-›Should know the number of carbons in each part

›-Basic stages of glycolysis

The Week of 11/18-11-22

SPARK Lecture on cell membranes on Monday!  Cell Respiration Quiz on Thurs 11/21.

  • Mon 11/18:  More on Cell Respiration.  Link reaction.  Krebs Cycle.  Keep reading Chapter 9.
  • Tues 11/19:  Krebs Cycle and Electron Chain Reaction.  Anaerobic respiration.  More on Chapter 9.
  • Thurs 11/21:  Short Quiz (4 stages of Cell Respiration, locations, inputs, outputs, energy carriers).  Review Electron Chain Reaction.   Introduce Cell Respiration Lab.  Finish reading Chapter 9.
Enjoy your week off!  Finish reading Chapter 9 and start reading Chapter 10 if you have time.  Remember that you can also pick an extra credit book to read and get started on that!  See the book list in the documents section under "Extra Credit Opportunities".
