The Week of 10/1-10/5

You should be working on your seed germination inquiry.  If you want to change pH or salinity and make solutions here at school, please plan on bringing small sealable containers to class and spending some time during FLEX or other free time to make your solutions.
  • Mon 10/1:  Turn in Seed Germination Pre-Write.  Finish water, mineral, and sugar transport in plants.  Xerophytes.  Review t-test.  Bring your TI-84 calculator and we will practice using them to find standard deviations and do t-tests.  Continue reading Chapter 36.
  • Wed 10/3: Structure and function of flowers.   Difference between monocots and dicots (eucots).   Dissect flowers.  Read Chapter 38.
  • Fri 10/5:  Plant Hormones.  Read 39.2.

The Week of 9/24-9/28

  • Mon 9/24:  Finish checking off Leaf structure worksheet.  Go outside and collect 10 different types of leaves.  Return to class and draw them, labeling all important features, paying attention to vein pattern, stem, textures, colors, etc.
  • Wed 9/26:  Posters and Tests back.  Notes on roots and stems.  Introduce Seed Germination Lab.  Review requirements for IB labs.  Start seed germination pre-write (due Mon 10/1) and/or finish leaf drawings.   Continue reading Chapter 35.
  • Fri 9/28:  Growth in plants, primary and secondary. Water transport/transpiration.  Start reading Chapter 36.
This week-end:  Work on your Seed Germination Lab.  Do some trials and figure out what you want to do.  The pre-write is due Mon 10/1 and the final lab is due Thursday 10/11 Friday 10/19.

Book Work for Plants, Chapter 29

Use your book to answers these questions about plants.  I am not going to be collecting them, but it is important for you to know this information about plants and your Early Work question on Fri 9/21 will involve these notes.

1)Origin of plants:  Describe features that enabled plants to colonize land
2)Describe the alternation of generations in plants
3)Describe the history of terrestrial adaptations (chart on p. 549 in old textbook)
4)What name is used instead of phylum for plants?
5)Describe the properties of bryophytes.
6)Describe the origin of VASCULAR plants.
7)Describe the seedless vascular plants.

What's On the Classification Test?

  1. Know the characteristics of the six invertebrate phyla we learned and be able to give examples
  2. Be able to list 2 species from different phyla from Kingdom all the way to Species (K, P, C, O, F, G, S).  You don't need subcategories
  3. Be able to make a simple dichotomous key (or phylogenetic tree) to separate 10 animals (I will give a list of animals, but you will have heard of them).

Finally! An Update for the New Year!

Welcome Back for the 2012-2013 School Year!  I am so excited to have you back in my class.  You can see our projected topics for this year in the documents section.  We have a little less than half of the IB Syllabus to complete (including our 2nd option of Neurobiology and Behavior) and we also will be focusing on 3-4 solid inquiry labs that can be used for your IA (internal assessment) score.

First 2.5 weeks of school:

  • Wed 9/5 (25 minute classes):  Welcome back to class.  Look at topics for the year.  Reminder of Class Expectations (see document section to remind yourself of these).
  • Fri 9/7:  Overview of domains + kingdoms.  Fish dichotomous key activity.  Turn in Fish Key (can be pairs or individuals).  Hand out dichotomous key project, due Wed 9/12.
  • Mon 9/10:  Lab on identifying phyla for animals (mostly invertebrates).  Read Chapter 33 in text.
  • Wed 9/12:  Exchange dichotomous keys, do them, and evaluate them.  Turn in.  Notes on classification (if you missed them, see documents).  Finish up Identifying Phyla lab and turn in today or Fri.  Hand out Animal Poster Mini-Project.
  • Fri 9/14:  Go to library or computer lab to research animal project.  Return to class to work on poster.  Read Chapter 34 to get more information on chordates.  Animal Mini-Project due Wed 9/19.  Short Test on Classification also on Wed 9/19.
  • Mon 9/17:  Classification activity:  identify animal orders and make a phylogenetic tree (for hand-out, see Documents).  Work time for Animal Project.
  • Wed 9/19:  Display animal posters and do a walk-around evaluation.  Give a formal evaluation to 6, trying to choose from a diverse group of animals (evaluation form will be provided).  Short Test on Classification.
  • Fri 9/21:  Begin plants!  Evolution of plants.  Introduce plant collection activity.  Skim Chapters 29+30.
